Where we're at
Our ability to deliver the outcomes needed by our residents is dependent upon a clear understanding of where we're at right now.
We have examples of excellent performance right across the Council. Our FLAG (Fighting litter, abandoned cars and graffiti)
and neighbourhood teams are dedicated to making the town a cleaner, safer place, we have helped to cut reported crime, reduce teenage pregnancies, helped more drug users access treatment, halved unemployment and seen vastly increased spending on school children at both primary and secondary level.
In 2006 The Audit Commision acknowledged that Doncaster is an ambitious council, with strong leadership and a
realistic vision in place, and our Benefits and Youth Service were rated as 'excellent'.
We recognise the continued need to improve our service provision by continuing working closely and effectively with our agency partners.
As we look around the Borough, the signs of progress and improvement are all around. An urban renaissance is underway and over the past decade, over £1bn has been invested into the town, creating over 24,500 jobs. Our international airport, the Frenchgate Shopping and Transport Interchange, the new Community Sports Complex, a revamped racecourse and Doncaster's Education City are just some of the major projects transforming Doncaster.
They are a culmination of a lot of work to make the Borough an even better place for our residents to live, a more accessible and attractive place for people to visit and a more vibrant city for businesses to invest in.
Where we're headed
Whilst we have made significant performance improvements, we recognise the serious challenges Doncaster continues to face and the scale of impact we need to make to increase our satisfaction ratings. Doncaster is still the 40th most deprived area in England and Wales, we have an unemployment rate higher than the national average, life expectancy and income rates below the national average, we are below the national average for GCSE attainment and there is serious inequality between the different wards of the Borough. And this list is by no means exhaustive.
The Council recognises how complex and interrelated these issues are. We need broader strategic thinking and direction setting alongside integrated Council services, working in close collaboration with our partners to enable us to make an impact where it matters.
We look forward to hearing how you can contribute to our ambition to make Doncaster a bigger, better and brighter place.
